Catchment basin containment system for contaminated surface water at Gollan Recycling GmbH, Germany

Overview

Gollan Recycling GmbH, a German company dedicated to efficient resource management, implemented a double-lining system to safely manage contaminated surface water at its Gottesgabe facility. As part of a comprehensive environmental protection strategy, the company required a reliable catchment basin system to prevent the uncontrolled release of potentially hazardous substances leaching from stored waste materials. Solmax Germany supplied and supported the installation of a high-performance geosynthetics system, meeting stringent national regulatory requirements under DIBt certification.

Challenge

At the Theodor-Körner-Weg 1 site in Gottesgabe, the accumulation of contaminated surface water posed a significant environmental risk. Substances washed out of recycled materials needed to be safely collected and prevented from entering the groundwater or surrounding environment. The design and construction of a catchment basin for such use in Germany is subject to the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt) approval, which mandates not only the performance of the individual components but also the integrity of their interaction within a complete system. The selected materials had to demonstrate chemical resistance, long-term durability, and ease of installation by certified personnel. Gollan Recycling GmbH required a solution that would offer high environmental safety while remaining cost-effective and efficient to deploy.

Solution

Solmax Germany provided a DIBt-certified double-lining system designed to ensure environmental protection and compliance. The solution comprised two layers of GSE® HD 2.0mm FrictionFlex DRS geomembrane, a structured high-density polyethylene liner offering exceptional chemical resistance and mechanical strength. With a total surface area of 3,000 m², this dual-layer configuration forms the primary containment barrier. Enclosed between the two geomembrane layers is the FABRINET® BP 50 1212 drainage layer, covering 1,500 m², which functions as a control and leak detection zone. This intermediate layer allows for continuous monitoring and facilitates the controlled collection of any seepage through a 90 mm drainage pipe (5.4 mm wall thickness), as shown in the site installation photos.

The installation process was completed by trained welders to ensure long-term sealing integrity. The system’s structured geomembrane surface improved frictional stability and allowed for safer and more precise placement during installation. Through its role as a full-system provider, Solmax ensured material compatibility, installation quality, and regulatory compliance. This solution effectively supports Gollan Recycling GmbH’s mission of responsible resource recovery while mitigating environmental risks.

By delivering a certified, durable geosynthetic containment system, Solmax reinforces its commitment to environmental sustainability and technical excellence in industrial water management applications.
