In the Ban Bueng District of the Chonburi Province, Thailand, a project supported the expansion of one of the region’s industrial developments. The Reinforced Soil Slope for Development project at the WHA-ESIE 2.1 Industrial Estate Area constructed an 8 m high reinforced soil slope (7.5 m exposed and 0.5 m embedded) to maximize the usable land available for future facilities and infrastructure. The permanent solution enabled the estate owner to optimize land use and support continued growth within the industrial estate.
The project site was constrained by limited space for conventional earthwork construction. While a traditional embankment design would typically use fill compacted at gentler slopes, the approach would require a significantly larger footprint, additional land acquisition, and higher project costs. To support the industrial estate expansion, the project team required a solution that could help maintain embankment stability while minimizing land take.
A reinforced soil slope system utilizing geosynthetic reinforcement was implemented, and 20,000 m² of MIRAGRID® GX80/30 was installed to construct stable, steepened embankments. The slope consisted of two layers of gabion blocks with a 0.5 meters embedded depth and thirteen 500 mm layers of reinforced fill. Replacing the conventional gradual embankments with a reinforced soil structure allowed the project to reduce land requirements and associated construction costs. The reinforced soil system provided a durable, long-term solution for the industrial estate. Compared with traditional approaches, this alternative solution reduced the project’s overall carbon footprint and offered an extended service life.
