Ocala highway stabilization with MIRAFI Rsi
Ocala built a four-lane highway over deep fill in an active mine using a multi-layer MIRAFI RSi geosynthetic system to stabilize weak, saturated soils.
During the construction of a solar farm in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, trucks consistently became stuck in the sandy, poorly graded soil. To address the low bearing capacity of the ground, a solution was implemented involving the integration of MIRAFI® RS580i geotextile with a 10 in (25 cm) layer of mixed sand and gravel.
MIRAFI RS580i was selected for its high tensile strength and excellent load distribution properties. When combined with the gravel mixture, it significantly improved the soil’s load-bearing capacity, allowing heavy trucks and construction equipment to operate without getting stuck.
Soil excavation and replacement were considered as alternative solutions, but both options were more expensive and time-consuming. In contrast, MIRAFI RS580i provided an efficient and cost-effective way to enhance the existing sandy soil.
The use of geosynthetics also reduced the need for extensive earthwork, which led to additional savings by minimizing equipment and labor demands. Furthermore, by avoiding the removal and replacement of large volumes of native sand, the project reduced waste generation and environmental impact. The geosynthetic solution also supports sustainability by delivering long-term performance while conserving natural resources compared to traditional construction methods.
The integration of MIRAFI RS580i delivered multiple benefits, including improved load-bearing capacity, enhanced site stability, increased durability, cost savings, and a lower environmental footprint. This approach effectively resolved the challenges presented by the site’s sandy soil and supported smooth progress throughout the construction phase.
The geosynthetic layer contributes to long-term stability and durability, safeguarding the solar farm from potential settlement or ground deformation. As a result, the overall lifespan of the project has been extended, making MIRAFI RS580i a critical component in the site’s successful and sustainable development.
