Coal mine dump wall, Sangatta, East Kalimantan, Indonesia
A 17.5 m high reinforced soil dump wall was constructed at the Sangatta coal mine to increase material handling capacity while supporting heavy dump truck loads and minimizing earthworks.

TRX City Park project needed to install a high-performance roof barrier layer as part of a green roof system. The objective was to provide long-term waterproofing for a rooftop application while supporting environmental performance requirements associated with green infrastructure. GSE® HD geomembrane was introduced during the design and material proposal stage, when the appointed installer recommended it as the preferred roof barrier layer based on its suitability for the application.
The project required a durable lining solution capable of ensuring effective waterproofing, protecting the underlying structure, and supporting the long-term performance of the green roof system. A total surface area of 6,720 m2 was lined using smooth, black GSE HD geomembrane manufactured at the Solmax plant in Malaysia. The planned construction timeframe for the work was two months.
The primary technical challenge associated with this project was the installation of the GSE HD geomembrane at a significant height on the TRX City Park rooftop. Working at elevation introduced constraints related to safety management, material handling, and installation logistics. Limited working space, exposure to wind, and the need for controlled lifting operations increased the complexity of installation compared to conventional ground-level geomembrane applications.
In addition to access and elevation constraints, the project was affected by frequent rainfall and unpredictable weather conditions typical of the Malaysian climate. GSE HD geomembrane installation and welding activities require dry surfaces and stable conditions, and intermittent rain, high humidity, and wet substrates periodically disrupted installation progress. These factors posed a risk to maintaining the planned schedule and required careful coordination of works to avoid compromising weld quality and system integrity.
The selected solution consisted of a GSE HD geomembrane roof barrier layer designed to deliver reliable waterproofing performance under challenging sites and environmental conditions. The material’s consistent manufacturing quality, smooth sheet finish, and stable engineering properties supported efficient installation and reliable field welding. Its durability and suitability for humid tropical climates allowed installation activities to resume promptly following weather interruptions.
By supplying a geomembrane with robust weldability and proven performance characteristics, the installation team was able to manage the constraints associated with rooftop installation and variable weather without compromising system performance. The completed installation provided long-term protection for the structure, ensured effective waterproofing for the green roof system, and supported environmental benefits such as improved stormwater management, reduced energy use, preserved biodiversity and urban heat island mitigation, enhanced overall sustainability.
Green roofing is an eco-friendly solution, not only excelling in stormwater management; it also helps in mitigating the urban heat island effect, enhancing air quality, preserving biodiversity, extending roof lifespan, and augmenting aesthetics.
