Overview
To improve riverbed conditions through sediment management, the Schwarze Elster River near Elsterwerda and Plessa, Germany, required the removal of approximately 10,000 m³ (13,080 yd³) of sediment. Commissioned by Gewässer und Bodenverband “Kleine Elster–Pulsnitz”, the Schwarze Elster project was completed by Limus Dredging between June 2025 and September 2026.
The project needed a combination of dredging and geosynthetic dewatering technology to deliver an effective and practical solution for sediment removal, secure containment, and water separation.
Challenge
Considering the large volume of dredged material needing appropriate management, operational flexibility was an important factor that a proposed solution would need to accommodate. Limus Dredging also preferred a product with which it had previous experience, supporting efficient installation and operation. Efficient water release is essential in dewatering activities, though safe containment of dredged sediments was one of the project requirements.
Solution
The Schwarze Elster project selected GEOTUBE® dewatering tubes, supplied in a variety of lengths with an 18.3-meter circumference, the system provided the dewatering performance, storage capacity, and operational flexibility required for the project.
GEOTUBE dewatering tubes were chosen for its storage capacity, safety features, effective filtration, and operational flexibility. The contractor’s previous experience with the product further supported successful implementation.
By combining performance and value, the GEOTUBE dewatering tube systems provide a cost-effective solution for dredged sediment dewatering while helping achieve the project’s sediment management objectives.
