The chemical compatibility of geomembranes with a given contaminant is a relative and often misunderstood concept. While polyethylene easily repels a wide range of potential chemical agents thanks to its inherent molecular structure and low permeation rate, most aggressive contaminants, following prolonged exposure, will eventually alter the original chemical content of a geomembrane’s polymeric structure. Consequences range widely from benign temporary swelling of the material followed by somewhat reduced mechanical properties to permanent oxidization and irreversible increased brittleness.
Although a chemical attack may affect the geomembrane’s performance to a certain degree, what is truly critical from an engineering viewpoint is the risk of project failure as a result of the anticipated reduced performance. In order to evaluate this risk, numerous factors must be considered in addition to conventional chemical compatibility data, as can be obtained, for instance, from laboratory immersion tests. Critical factors such as the exact nature of the contaminants, their temperature and concentrations along with the anticipated time of contact with the geomembrane (permanent or temporary), the type of application, the stresses and constraints acting on the liner and thickness of the latter must be closely reviewed to properly estimate the risk factor.
